Help people build confidence, connection and belonging through practical English.

HAPANI is seeking an experienced, encouraging and culturally sensitive English Tutor to deliver informal, conversation-based English support for refugee and asylum-seeking women and families. The role focuses on practical communication for everyday life and progression towards formal ESOL where appropriate.

Key responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver practical conversation-based English sessions.
  • Embed language learning within Women & Family Belonging Circles and Parent–Child sessions.
  • Build participants’ confidence in speaking and listening and support progression to formal ESOL.
  • Create a safe, inclusive and culturally respectful learning environment.
  • Work with HAPANI colleagues and local ESOL providers and maintain simple project records.

Essential requirements

  • Experience of teaching ESOL or delivering informal English-language support.
  • Strong facilitation and communication skills, with the ability to adapt to different literacy and language levels.
  • Understanding of barriers faced by refugee and asylum-seeking communities.
  • Experience of working with adults experiencing poverty, exclusion or interrupted education.
  • A patient, culturally sensitive and inclusive approach.
  • Bilingual proficiency in Somali, Arabic or both.
