Help people build confidence, connection and belonging through practical English.
HAPANI is seeking an experienced, encouraging and culturally sensitive English Tutor to deliver informal, conversation-based English support for refugee and asylum-seeking women and families. The role focuses on practical communication for everyday life and progression towards formal ESOL where appropriate.
Key responsibilities
- Plan and deliver practical conversation-based English sessions.
- Embed language learning within Women & Family Belonging Circles and Parent–Child sessions.
- Build participants’ confidence in speaking and listening and support progression to formal ESOL.
- Create a safe, inclusive and culturally respectful learning environment.
- Work with HAPANI colleagues and local ESOL providers and maintain simple project records.
Essential requirements
- Experience of teaching ESOL or delivering informal English-language support.
- Strong facilitation and communication skills, with the ability to adapt to different literacy and language levels.
- Understanding of barriers faced by refugee and asylum-seeking communities.
- Experience of working with adults experiencing poverty, exclusion or interrupted education.
- A patient, culturally sensitive and inclusive approach.
- Bilingual proficiency in Somali, Arabic or both.
